From Saint Louis Art Museum:
Eugène Delacroix took the subject of this painting from Goethe's 1773 play Götz von Berlichingen. Delacroix chose to depict the dramatic moment when the medieval knight Götz succeeds in having his soldiers capture his enemy, Weislingen. The painting is filled with action: fierce hand to hand combat with rearing horses and warring men is arranged in a tight group near the center, while another group of men is engaged in a larger skirmish on the lower left side.
