From the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London:
Monet settled in Argenteuil, about nine kilometres from Paris, in 1871. This view of a quiet tributary of the Seine near his home contrasts with some of Monet's boldly experimental works of this period. This painting is fairly conventional in technique and composition, and recalls the river scenes of Charles-François Daubigny.
