From Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart:
In freeing his painting of narrative elements, for the most part, Monet focuses the viewer’s eye on the phenomenon of his own - then quite revolutionary - concept of art. 'Impressionism' was the term used by Paris critics - initially with an uncomplimentary undertone - in reference to this and other works by Renoir, Sisley and Cézanne on exhibit in the Salon. Monet remained an impressionist and became, alongside Cézanne, one of the two most influential vanguards of modern painting in the 20th century.
