From Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts:
During his career, Monet was especially interested in recording the effects of sunlight at different times of day and throughout the seasons. From 1890 to 1891, the artist created a series of 25 paintings based on the haystacks scattered in a field outside the back door of his home in Giverny, a village 50 miles northwest of Paris. He painted the landscapes outdoors (en plein-air) and employed a series of broken, rhythmic brush strokes to capture the momentary natural light of the day. This canvas, painted two years after the artist’s famous series of haystacks, exhibits Monet’s continued interest in capturing the transitory effects of light through direct observation.
